Change to "Update" page when on "View" page

It would be really handy to be able to change from the “view” to the “update” page when viewing a specific item.

This request is covered by a workaround, and it is on the roadmap as live.

Problem

From the view page of one item, the person has no way onto the update page for that same item.

Why this is a workaround

The details screen already has Allow Editing. That control shows Edit for the people you choose, and Edit opens the update form for the row they are viewing. The view page stays a view. The update page stays the form. The missing piece was the control that joins them, and it is that switch.

How to use it

  1. Confirm the database has a Form (Update one item) screen. Put on it only the fields people should change.
  2. Open the details screen, the one that opens when someone taps a row on a list.
  3. In Behaviour, turn on Allow Editing.
  4. Under Who can see Edit, leave the filter empty if everyone who can open the page may edit. Add a filter on the Users database if only some roles should see Edit.
  5. The app must have login before that audience filter can be set. On a public app with no Users database, everyone who can open the page sees Edit.
  6. Allow Editing does not change who can open the page, and it does not change which rows data restriction returns. Set those separately if you need them.
  7. Publish.
  8. As a person who should edit, open an item from the list. Edit is on the page. It opens the update form for that item. Change a field, save, and confirm the details page shows the new value.
  9. As a person who should not edit, open the same kind of item and confirm Edit is absent.

If people should change fields without opening the details page at all, use List (Update items) for that queue instead of a view list.
