We’re exploring a new Near Me experience for NotionApps that would allow app users to find records based on their current location.
For location-based apps, this would make it easier for users to discover nearby places. One use case is for restaurant users can use it to eat, compare options, and make faster decisions using existing restaurant data such as rating, cuisine, price range, and review count.
What problem does this solve?
Today, NotionApps already supports Maps & Location functionality, including showing locations on a map, capturing a user’s current location, selecting addresses, and storing location data in Notion.
The proposed Near Me feature would extend that functionality by allowing apps to filter and sort records based on distance.
For example, a user could open a restaurant app and select:
“Show me restaurants within 5 miles, sorted by highest rating, with $$ pricing.”
This would make discovery faster, more relevant, and more useful for location-based apps.
Proposed experience
A user opens a restaurant directory app and sees a Near Me option on the restaurant list or grid screen.
When the user taps Near Me, the app asks for location permission. Once granted, the app calculates which restaurants are nearby and shows results based on the selected radius.
Restaurant results could display information such as:
- Restaurant name
- Distance from the user
- Rating or review score
- Cuisine or category
- Price range
- Review count
Example result:
Taco Garden
0.8 mi away · 4.7 stars · Mexican · $$
MVP scope
The first version of this feature would focus on the core discovery experience:
- Detect the user’s current location
- Filter restaurant records by radius
- Support radius options such as 1, 5, 10, or 25 miles
- Sort results by nearest first
- Display distance on restaurant cards or rows
- Work with records that already have latitude/longitude or usable location field data
Future enhancement ideas
After the MVP, this feature could be expanded to support:
- Manual “search near this city/address” option
- Map view showing nearby restaurants
- Combined ranking such as “best rated nearby”
- Saved default radius
- Mobile-optimized location discovery
- Support for other use cases like clinics, gyms, stores, events, service providers, or local directories
Community feedback
We’d love feedback from builders who create location-based apps.
Would this help your app use case?
Some examples may include:
- Restaurant directories
- Local business listings
- Service provider directories
- Clinic or healthcare directories
- Gym or studio finders
- Event discovery apps
- Store locators
